Researchers, Authors Celebrated at University Co-op Awards

The Hamilton Book Awards are among the highest honors of literary achievement given to UT authors and are named in honor of the late Robert W. Hamilton, emeritus professor in the UT School of Law and former chairperson of the co-op’s board of directors. A total of 44 faculty and staff members were nominated for the awards this year.

Celebrating Our First-Gen Longhorns

The University celebrated First-Gen week November 6-10. Schools, colleges, departments and programs across the Forty Acres hosted events and activities to celebrate the growing population first-generation students.

Faculty P&T Information Sessions – Fall 2023

The provost’s Faculty Affairs team will be hosting one more promotion information session this fall semester. These sessions include a representative from the President’s Promotion (& Tenure) committee and offer the opportunity to share advice and answer questions focused on the relevant promotion(s). Please join us whether you are thinking about your own promotion or mentoring a fellow faculty member with their promotion. Information about the remaining session:

Accepting Submissions: Faculty Authors Reception

The Faculty Authors Reception was created to highlight the breadth of scholarship and creative activity taking place across the university. We are now accepting submissions for this year’s Faculty Authors Reception. There will also be an in-person event on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 to celebrate published works from 2023. Eligibility for participation are as follows:

  • Published works including scholarly monographs, published creative works (e.g., novels and anthologies of poetry), exhibition catalogs, and edited collections.
  • Books must have been published between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023.
  • Current UT Austin faculty member.
  • Deadline: November 17, 2023

CTL Updates: November 2023

The CTL November newsletter includes  the following highlights:

Teaching in the Age of Generative AI
The technologies supporting generative AI tools continue to change and become more sophisticated. How can we create assignments for our students that addresses the presence of generative AI tools? This workshop will focus on providing suggestions for crafting assignments that acknowledge their presence, either accepting or not accepting their use, focusing primarily on assessment. In part two on Dec. 6, participants will be offered the opportunity to share their ideas and receive peer feedback.

Image/Text Code: Remix Culture in the Age of AI
The Center for Teaching and Learning is pleased to host Dr. Erin Reilly for our December Image/Text/Code event (Dec. 13). Dr. Reilly is the Inaugural Director of Innovation & Entrepreneurship for Moody College of Communication. In this session, Dr. Reilly will give us a guided discussion of a book chapter, “Remix Culture in the Age of AI,” that she is completing this semester, following up with a discussion around the ways in which AI are transforming the work of a diverse range of creative industries.

Call for Submissions: 2024 Solar Eclipse

In April 2024, Austin will experience a total solar eclipse — its first since 1397 and last until 2343. In addition to a UT community-wide viewing and other experiential programming, the University plans to mark the occasion by highlighting a wide variety of faculty and student work. We hope to feature the breadth and depth of our scholarship and knowledge creation across disciplines through topics like:

  • Humanities and social sciences explorations of eclipses and space, e.g. indigenous traditions or the history of science
  • Eclipse- and space-related art, archival artifacts and creative work
  • Austin and North America in 1397 and in 2343
  • Space science, astronomy and aerospace engineering

Please consider submitting any responsive ideas or previously published work to Sarah McAbee in University Marketing and Communications. Deadline: January 16, 2024.

PIVOT: Getting Started

The Office of the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors and UT Libraries are teaming up to bring information about finding funding opportunities to faculty, researchers and research administrators. Join us for an exploration of Pivot and learn how it can help both early and later career scholars find a variety of government, non-profit, foundation and commercial funding.This workshop will focus on:

  • Claiming and enhancing your research/scholarly profile
  • Basic navigation and browsing
  • Finding potential collaborators

The workshop will be held on Thursday, Nov. 16 from 2-3 p.m. via Zoom.

City of Austin – UT Austin Research Collaborations: Fall 2023 Information Session
The Office of the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors and the City of Austin are teaming up to give an overview of how to leverage the Master Interlocal Agreement (ILA) for collaborative research projects and introduce the City’s “Civic Research Agenda” and “Grants for Innovation” programs. Join us for an information session on Tuesday, November 28 from 1-2 p.m. on Teams to learn about:

  • The types of research and activities supported by the ILA
  • How to connect research needs with expertise and get your projects started
  • The City’s programs for:
    • Collaborating with key partners to co-create strategies for addressing emerging challenges
    • Identifying and utilizing external funding for innovation and research-based initiatives
