Non-Tenure Track Task Force

Completed Initiative

Introduction

In the fall 2016 semester, the Board of Regents introduced a new title series, Professor of Instruction, to Regents’ Rule 31001: Faculty Appointments and Titles. Since the introduction, deans from across campus expressed interest in being able to leverage this title series within their non-tenure track faculty. Implementing a new title series requires careful considerations.

To address those considerations, Provost McInnis assembled a campus-wide task force that includes non-tenure and tenured faculty from each of the colleges and schools on the UT Austin campus. The task force will work to develop recommendations for guidelines that address current issues and future changes that need to be made for faculty holding non-tenure positions.

  • Consistent use of non-tenure track titles across colleges, departments, and schools, including the implementation of the Professor of Practice and Professor of Instruction title series at UT Austin.
  • Consistent use of contracts across colleges, departments, and schools.
  • Career development for non-tenure track faculty.
  • Involvement in college, departmental, school-wide committees and governance.
  • Climate issues for non-tenure track faculty.
  • Terminology for addressing the population with a label other than non-tenure track.
  • Consideration of the criteria for promotion.
