Dear UT community,
I am writing to share the news that Angela Evans is planning to conclude her tenure as dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs, effective December 31, 2020.
Dean Evans has worked hard to strengthen the LBJ School’s impact and reputation as a scholarly center for policy research as well as a leader in public policy education. Since she joined UT in 2009, the School and the UT community have benefitted immensely from her contributions as a dedicated scholar, teacher and most recently as dean.
Under her leadership, the LBJ community has contributed to major policy deliberations both here in the U.S. and abroad, and has engaged future generations aspiring to pursue careers in public service and policy. Dean Evans’ tenure as dean will culminate with this year’s celebration of the LBJ School’s 50th anniversary. The celebration will feature several major forums that bring together a broad array of leaders, scholars and citizens known for their contributions to society.
President Fenves shared this about Dean Evans’ contributions to UT Austin.
“Since 2016, Angela Evans has led the LBJ School of Public Affairs with a deep commitment to service. She has expanded the school’s impact, particularly by building strong connections among students, faculty members and government officials and organizations across the U.S. Generations of future public servants have benefitted from Dean Evans’ leadership and I wish her the best as she concludes her time as dean.”
While Dean Evans’ accomplishments are many, these are a few that I would like to highlight:
- The LBJ School strengthened its national academic reputation and ranked No. 9 among graduate public affairs schools in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2019 ranking.
- Dean Evans supported several new initiatives, including the creation of an urban lab designed to bridge research and practice by serving as a policy hub for cities. She also collaborated with colleges and schools across campus through existing dual degree programs and new portfolio programs, and she established a new joint program with Dell Medical School.
- As dean, she fostered a diverse community of professional practitioners and academic scholars by bringing national thought leaders and emerging scholars to join the LBJ faculty. She also led efforts to implement more experiential and non-traditional courses.
- A major focus of her leadership has been strengthening diversity and inclusivity within the LBJ School. Through her efforts, the diversity of the faculty and students increased. Curriculum, programming and training were enhanced to include a range of perspectives. She also helped create a new leadership position in the school to ensure the advancement of diversity and inclusivity.
- Under Dean Evans’ leadership, the student affairs, career services and alumni areas were modernized and better positioned to serve the needs of students – from recruitment to beyond graduation.
- She has been instrumental in designing and growing the LBJ Washington Center, offering a unique graduate education focused on national issues.
- Dean Evans led development efforts to enhance the school’s impact by raising more than $28 million.
In addition to her leadership of the LBJ School, Dean Evans has held multiple leadership positions in major national organizations, including serving as president of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management and deputy director of the Congressional Research Service. She is also a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and has received several National Science Foundation grants.
Dean Evans cares deeply about UT, and the LBJ School community.
