Maryam Hussaini and Maike Morrison, undergraduate students from the College of Natural Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin, have each been awarded a 2019 Barry Goldwater Scholarship, a prestigious national scholarship given to students pursuing careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering fields.
Scholars are selected for their commitment to a research career, effective display of intellectual intensity, and potential for a significant future contribution to research in their chosen field.
Maryam Hussaini, a senior astronomy major, was selected for her research measuring the magnetic field strengths of low-mass stars, which has implications on the habitability of planets within the habitable zone of these stars.
Maike Morrison, a senior mathematics major, was selected for her research analyzing conscientious vaccination exemption (CVE) rates in Texas schools to investigate the Texas counties and school districts most at risk of an outbreak due to high CVE rates, and to understand what sociodemographic variables are driving the CVE rates.
Hussaini and Morrison will each receive up to $7,500 to help cover costs associated with tuition, mandatory fees, books, room and board. They are among 496 college students from across the country to receive the scholarship for the 2019-20 academic year.
