Sofia Helpert, a UT Austin senior double majoring in physics and chemical engineering, has been selected by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) to join an elite group of Astronaut Scholars for the 2019-20 academic school year.
The Astronaut Scholarship is a national award that is given to outstanding undergraduate students studying in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. Astronaut Scholars show initiative, creativity, and excellence in their chosen field.
“I am proud to congratulate Sofia on her selection as an Astronaut Scholar,” said Maurie McInnis, executive vice president and provost. “Sofia is an outstanding student, and I commend her on this prestigious recognition.”
As a part of this honor Sofia will receive:
- A scholarship up to $10,000
- Expense paid trip to ASF’s Innovators Weekend in the fall
- Life-long engagement with the astronauts, Astronaut Scholar alumni, and the foundation
Astronaut Scholarships are awarded to students in their junior or senior year of college who intend to pursue research or advance their field upon completion of their final degree. This year the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation awarded 52 scholarships to students from 38 different universities across the nation.
