Dear faculty colleagues,
Tomorrow marks the first day of classes and the beginning of a new academic year. I hope you had an opportunity this summer to recharge and prepare for what I’m sure will be a busy fall semester.
This year, we welcome 198 new faculty members from around the world, in every college and school, and across all ranks. Our new colleagues bring with them diverse experiences and areas of expertise, and their contributions will enrich our campus culture and community. Please join me in welcoming them to campus and supporting them as they begin their new roles as educators and researchers at UT Austin.
As first-year students arrive, I encourage you to do what UT faculty members have always done. Challenge them, engage with them, and support them during the transition to this exciting new chapter of their lives. True digital natives, the vast majority of these students were born in 2000. They are sophisticated consumers and creators of media and data. They’ve grown up in a world connected through Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube and smart devices. Their K-12 educational experiences have often been delivered using emerging and innovative technologies. We have much to learn from them, and I encourage you think about ways to innovate and adapt your teaching opportunities, when appropriate.
Best of luck on a productive semester. Thank you for your continued support of our students and contributions to the campus community.
