May 15, 2018

Dear UT community,

I am excited to announce Eric T. Meyer will serve as the next dean of the School of Information, effective Aug. 1, 2018.

Dean-designate Meyer, a distinguished scholar of informatics, comes to UT Austin from the University of Oxford, where he currently serves as director of graduate studies at the Oxford Internet Institute and professor of social informatics. As director of graduate studies at the Oxford Internet Institute, Meyer has led efforts to develop innovative master’s and doctoral degree programs, enhance recruitment efforts, work closely with faculty members and students to provide exceptional educational experiences, and grow a positive scholarly environment for research, teaching, and learning.

Meyer earned his undergraduate degree from Ohio University, a master’s degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and his doctoral degree from Indiana University Bloomington. His research focuses on the connections between people and the technologies they use, and how people shape and are shaped by new digital technologies. This includes how digital technologies allow people to change the things they research, the ways they learn, and how people share information and collaborate.

The School of Information is widely recognized as one of the top information schools in the world, and Dean-designate Meyer is an excellent fit to lead and build upon its success. For more than 65 years, the School of Information has delivered education to information professionals with topics spanning information science including interaction design, digital curation, information work, and data management. The school attracts students from throughout the nation and across the globe and offers a range of graduate degree programs, as well as undergraduate and interdisciplinary educational opportunities.

I would like to thank the search committee for their exhaustive international search to identify a very competitive pool of candidates.

I am confident we have selected a fantastic leader and colleague in Dean-designate Meyer. Please join me in welcoming him to the UT Austin community.
