Provost’s Authors Fellowship

In an effort to provide increased support for associate professors pursuing promotion to full professor, the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost has created the Provost’s Authors Fellowship. Through this program, faculty members engaged in the development and publication of scholarly books will have financial and programmatic support to focus on their work, regardless of their field of study or academic discipline. This includes the oppoutunity to benefit from small-group writing support. The program will utilize Wendy Belcher’s Writing Your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks, which may also be fruitfully used for books.

  • 18 associate professors will be selected as fellows for 15 months, beginning in June 2019.
  • Fellows will receive one-month of summer salary, each summer, during the 2019 and 2020 summer semesters.
  • Fellows will be granted two course adjustments for the academic year, at the discretion of the dean/department chair, to provide more focused time for research and scholarship.
  • Fellows will receive an additional $4,000 for research support or professional development.
  • Fellows will be organized into small writing groups that will meet monthly to read and provide feedback on one another's work. Attendance at these monthly meetings is a mandatory component of the program.
  • The provost will host luncheons, at both the beginning and the end of the academic year, to celebrate and recognize the efforts of the faculty fellows. The fellows’ dean/department chair will also be invited.
  • Upon completing the program, participating faculty members will submit a brief report detailing their progress.
  • Fellows will be asked to serve as mentors to future fellows.  

Application Information

Who is eligible?

Any associate professor currently working on a book project may apply. However, faculty who will be on sabbatical or leave, or undergoing a promotion review are not eligible.

What should I submit with my application?

  • 500-word description of current research/book project.
  • 200-word statement about the benefit this program could have for progress towards full professor.
  • Copy of CV.

What are the criteria for selection?

Fellows will be chosen based on the excellence and impact of the proposed research/book project, the potential impact of participation on progress toward full professor, and seniority at the associate professor rank.

Participation Requirements

  • Participate in assigned small writing groups of three to four colleagues, based not on academic area, but on the concepts/themes/ideas expressed in the selected project.
  • Read all materials for the program. This includes reading Belcher’s guide prior to the opening reception; reviewing the writing of colleagues in the monthly writing groups; and being prepared to respond and provide feedback, insight, support, and encouragement to faculty colleagues.
  • Meet monthly, at a universally shared time appointed by the program, to discuss one another’s scholarly work. Fellows must commit to participate in each meeting throughout the entire year, including the summer, for a total of 12 meetings. If a fellow cannot attend in person, electronic participation is acceptable.
  • Provide feedback on the program, so the university can improve support of faculty research and scholarship.
  • Provide a record of the impact of the program on faculty research and scholarship to the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost.
  • Serve as future mentors to the next cohort of faculty fellows.
