Larry Singell, Senior Vice Provost of Resource Management
Larry D. Singell was named Senior Vice Provost of Resource Management at the University Texas at Austin in 2019. As Senior Vice Provost, Singell provides strategic oversight and planning for the Provost Office’s budget, academic space, and the office of institutional research at the University of Texas, which employs more than 4000 faculty and enrolls 51,500 students.
From 2011 to 2019, Singell served Executive Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University. As executive dean of the College, Singell administered the oldest and largest division of Indiana University, with more than a 1000 faculty and 10,000 graduate and undergraduate students.
Prior to his arrival at Indiana University, Singell was a 23-year member of the faculty of the University of Oregon. He served as associate dean in the University of Oregon College of Arts and Sciences from 2008-11 and as head of the Economics Department from 2006-08.
An economist whose research focuses on the economics of higher education, Singell has worked extensively in the field of applied labor economics. He has studied a wide range of topics— from the effects of financial aid programs on access, retention, and graduation, to the ways in which education, discrimination and career choices affect faculty placement in academic leadership positions. Most recently his research has focused on understanding the skills and qualities associated with successful academic leadership, how leaders are selected, and how particular leadership skills and qualities materially affect the productivity of an organization. He has also studied the role of Sunshine Laws in the selection of university and college presidents.
Singell serves on the editorial board and is a former editor of the Economics of Education Review, the leading journal in the economics of education.
Singell holds a B.A. from the University of Colorado and an M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from the University of California-Santa Barbara.
