Over the past weekend, high school seniors from across the state received a virtual call like no other when representatives from the Office of Admissions surprised each of them with a $48,000 Impact Scholarship.
The Impact Scholarship program was created in 2017 with 32 recipients, and now in 2020, has more than doubled in the number of awards granted. The scholarship program, which provides $12,000 per year to fund the cost of a UT Austin education, was created for students from across the state of Texas who are making an impact in their local communities.
This is the fourth year that the UT admissions team has surprised selected incoming freshmen with the Impact Scholarship.
“The Impact Scholars are outstanding and impressive high school seniors who are making an impact in their hometowns all across Texas. It is an honor to award them this well-deserved scholarship, and we can’t wait to see the impact they make on the Forty Acres and in the world,” said Rachelle Hernandez, senior vice provost for enrollment management.
In early 2021, UT’s current Impact Scholars will welcome the new recipients via a scheduled virtual event. The event will make it possible for the current and new Impact Scholars to meet and ask questions, together celebrating the community of Impact Scholars on campus.
Students are selected for the scholarship through a holistic review process. A student’s demonstrated leadership, proven academic success, financial need, perseverance and commitment to their schools and communities are all factors that are evaluated when selecting Impact Scholars.
In total, over 70 admitted fall 2021 students will be awarded Impact Scholarships. To learn more about Impact Scholarships, email Texas One Stop.
