Andreas Matouschek Named Interim Dean of the College of Natural Sciences

Dear UT Community,

I am pleased to announce that Andreas Matouschek, Associate Dean for Research and Facilities, has been appointed Interim Dean of the College of Natural Sciences. Dr. Matouschek brings extensive leadership experience, overseeing the multifaceted research enterprise for the College of Natural Sciences and supporting strategic direction and decision-making across the college.

Throughout his academic and scientific career, Dr. Matouschek has brought a forward-thinking, collaborative approach. He has been part of college leadership since 2020 and has spent more than two decades in leadership roles across departments, centers and units at both UT and his previous institution, Northwestern University.
Dr. Matouschek has been directly involved in a wide array of work to serve and support students and faculty. This includes developing and modernizing training programs, setting up and sustaining administrative structures for an academic department, providing oversight for many core facilities as director of UT’s Center for Biomedical Research Support and building the High-Throughput Testing Core, a key initiative in the campuswide COVID-19 response. He is well known not only here on the Forty Acres but also to members of our UT community based in Port Aransas, Fort Davis and throughout the Texas Field Station Network.

Most recently, Dr. Matouschek’s vision and oversight of research priorities and college facilities have been instrumental in the launch of new student spaces and new research efforts throughout the college. His office shepherded the completion of the new collaborative informal learning area in Welch Hall and the CNS Wellness Center in Painter Hall. Dr. Matouschek also has been a driving force behind the successful launch of initiatives such as Texas Biologics, the Center for Generative AI and the Texas Quantum Institute. As a professor in the Department of Molecular Biosciences, he led a lab exploring the biochemical mechanisms of cellular protein quality control processes, helping to advance understanding of drivers of neurodegeneration and cancerous activity in cells.

Having worked the last four years with Dr. Matouschek, I know he will lead the college with a resolute focus on what is best for the entire community, both now and in the future. There is no one better to bring forward the ideas and momentum for the college in the months ahead.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Matouschek and welcoming him to the role.

Sincerely,

DAVID VANDEN BOUT, Ph.D.
