The Roy Crane Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts has been given to two students in the performing arts category. The award rotates annually between performing, literary, and visual arts, and all undergraduate and graduate students at UT Austin from any major or area of study may compete for the award.
This year 41 applications were submitted. Awardee portfolios included performing art pieces from both undergraduate and graduate students.
2023 Roy Crane Award recipients:
Yunina Barbour-Payne, M.A.
Doctoral candidate, Theatre and Dance
- Yunina’s portfolio included an ‘Artistic Statement’, ‘Stage Work’, ‘Director’, their work as a ‘Dramaturg’, and ‘Affrilachian Theatre Maker’
They shared 3 trailers for their work in “Penfold Theatre Presents: A War of the Worlds”, “Penfold Theatre Presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Penfold Theatre Presents A Christmas Carol Classic Radiocast”. View their blog post discussing the inspiration behind the superhero story of Kemi, the importance of representation in theatre for young audiences, and the hero within us all for “Kimmy”.
Brandon Foskett
Undergraduate student (Senior), Music
- Brandon’s portfolio included his performance of Reinhold Glière’s: Horn Concerto, Op. 91, his participation in ‘Lalei Googoosh: Persian Lullaby’ with UT’s Middle Easter Ensemble (‘Bereket’), and their project ‘Black Viper’.
Each recipient received an award of $2,150.
To be considered for the award a student must submit an application and a portfolio.
