Eight Students Receive the 2021 Roy Crane Award for Their Achievements in the Literary Arts

The Roy Crane Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts has been given to eight students in the category of the literary arts. The award rotates annually between performing, literary, and visual arts, and all undergraduate and graduate students at UT Austin from any major or area of study may compete for the award.

This year 85 applications were submitted. Awardees were selected amongst the fiction and poetry subcategories.

2021 Roy Crane Award recipients:

Fiction, Winner

Isabel Ibanez, Graduate student (Doctoral), Iberian and Latin American Languages and Cultures

Clara Mundy, Undergraduate student (Senior), English/Plan I Honors

  • “Schism in a Soul So Tender”

Fiction, Honorable Mention

Stephanie Gibson, Graduate student (Masters), Creative Writing

  • “Yo, Woman!”

Diego Diaz, Undergraduate student (Junior), English Honors

  • “Weeds From Concrete” and “CĂ©sar and Esme”

Poetry, Winner

Stephanie Yue Duhem, Graduate student (Masters), Creative Writing

  • Poems: “Whatever is Unsaid,” “Double Life,” “drift,” “Forgive Him,” and “Good Morning to No One”

Bethany Errickson, Undergraduate student (Senior), Rhetoric & Writing and Humanities

  • Poems: “Soft in the animal’s belly,” “My Father’s Pyre,” “sister as cygnet,” “Adult Almanac,” and “Divorcing Her Through Him” 

Poetry, Honorable Mention

Alfredo Aguilar, Graduate student (Masters), Writing

Ingrid Piña, Undergraduate student (Junior), International Relations and Global Studies

  • Poems: “Church in Houston,” “Confessional,” “What I Could Do,” “Two Bears,” and “Christmas Card”

Each recipient received an award between $462.50 and $1,000.00.

To be considered for the award a student must submit an application and a portfolio. The selection committee was chaired by Edward Carey, a professor in the Department of English.
