Course Prospectuses & Proposals
Developing Courses for the New Core Curriculum
Faculty and academic units interested in developing courses for the new Core Curriculum can find guidance and proposal information on this page.
Prospectuses outline the common expectations for courses seeking designation within each of the 12 proposed Core requirements. Prospectuses have been created by faculty, are informed by the recommendations of UT Austin’s Core Curriculum Task Force, and are compliant with Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and UT System standards.
2027–28 Pilot Year
The 2027–28 academic year will serve as a pilot year for courses aligned with the new Core Curriculum, while current Core courses continue to be offered.
The University will work with colleges, schools, and departments to pilot courses across the new Core requirements while minimizing disruption to instructional plans already underway.
Lessons from the pilot year will inform implementation of the new Core Curriculum beginning in 2028–29.
A prospectus is a guide for developing a course that fulfills a particular Core requirement. It identifies the common, unifying elements courses should share, which may include:
- Essential questions and themes
- Foundational content
- Learning outcomes
- Critical learning experiences
A prospectus is not a syllabus. Faculty and departments have flexibility to develop courses that reflect their disciplines, approaches, and areas of expertise while meeting the common expectations outlined in the prospectus.
Faculty may propose an existing course or a new course for designation within the new UT Austin Core Curriculum.
Proposals may be submitted by individual faculty members or collaboratively by groups of faculty. Both are welcome; collaborative proposals are encouraged, as creating common learning experiences across course sections is a priority of the proposed new Core Curriculum.
Before submitting a proposal:
- Review the prospectus for the Core requirement you are proposing to fulfill.
- Discuss the proposal with your department and college or school leadership.
- Prepare the materials requested in the proposal portal.
- Submit your proposal through the link associated with the appropriate Core requirement above.
Because instructional planning involves faculty commitments, graduate student support, degree plans, classroom capacity, and other considerations, faculty are strongly encouraged to work with their department and college or school leadership before submitting a proposal.
