Hunter Powell, Senior Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Initiatives
As Senior Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Initiatives, Hunter Powell works closely with University leadership on interdisciplinary academic program development, general education curriculum strategy and faculty recruitment.
An award-winning scholar of British intellectual, political and religious history, Powell earned a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. He went on to obtain an M.Phil. and Ph.D. in History from the University of Cambridge, where he studied under John Morrill, and a M.Div. from Westminster Theological Seminary. His doctoral dissertation received the Prince Consort Prize, awarded annually for Cambridge’s most distinguished doctoral thesis in the study of history.
Powell is the author of The Crisis of British Protestantism: Church Power in the Puritan Revolution, 1638–44 and numerous scholarly articles and book chapters on religion, political thought and constitutional humanities. In addition to his role in the Provost’s Office, he is a professor and Senior Research Fellow in the Civitas Institute and board member for the School of Civic Leadership.
Alongside his academic career, Powell has built and led companies in both technology and real estate.
