The Office of Academic Technology (OAT) and the Office of Academic Affairs have developed recommendations for instructors who wish to require the use of generative AI tools in their classrooms. This guidance will be updated on an ongoing basis.

Recommended Practices for Requiring the Use of Generative AI in the Classroom

• Ensure that you understand and abide by all aspects of the UT’s Acceptable use of ChatGPT and Similar AI Tools policy. Generally, allowable use includes the use of data that is publicly available or defined as Published university information. If you have questions about the use of a specific tool in your classroom, contact the Information Security Office and share the following:
  • If the service is cloud-based software;
  • How you plan to use the software in your course; and
  • If any type of controlled or confidential University will be used or stored as part of your classroom use.
• Learn and teach students how to adjust data control settings within ChatGPT and other generative AI tools to opt out of allowing the vendor to use individual user data to train their models.
• Ensure that your syllabus clearly identifies Syllabus Policy statements regarding the use of generative AI in your class. If you plan to encourage or require the use of generative AI in your class, ensure that requirement is clearly listed in the Required Course Materials section of your syllabus. Include the Acceptable Use Policy in your syllabus and review it with your students.
•  If you require the use of generative AI in your course, ensure that any specific software requirements are submitted to the University Co-Op using the Submit Materials form. Submission of software requirements to the Co-Op software is a University policy, even if:
  • There is no cost for the tool;
  • The requirement is listed in the syllabus;
  • The class has already started (The CO-OP has agreed to assist you in updating your course).
