Public Access to Undergraduate Course Information (HB 2504)
Quick start
Instructors of record should submit syllabi and instructor CVs according to their department or college/school procedures. Required materials must be available in the University public repository no later than seven days after the first day of the applicable academic term or summer session.
Welcome
The University of Texas at Austin provides transparent public access to required undergraduate course information in accordance with Texas Education Code §51.974 (HB 2504). Curriculum & Academic Administration coordinates the institutional compliance process in partnership with the Office of Academic Technology, Enterprise Platforms, colleges and schools, departments, and other campus partners.
What HB 2504 Requires
For each covered undergraduate classroom course offered for credit, the University must make the following information publicly available:
| Required Information | What Must Be Included |
|---|---|
| Course syllabus | Major course requirements, including major assignments and examinations; learning objectives; a general description of lecture or discussion topics; and required or recommended readings. (HB2504 only, click here for additional university rules for the course syllabus) |
| Instructor curriculum vitae | Post-secondary education; previous teaching positions with institutions and dates; and significant professional publications with full-citation information. |
| Departmental operating budget | The most recent departmental budget information, when available. |
| End-of-course student evaluations | Evaluation of information was made available in accordance with applicable law and University policy. |
Public Access Standards
- Required information must be accessible from the University homepage within no more than three links.
- Users must be able to search without registration, a username, or a password.
- Syllabi and instructor CVs must be publicly available no later than seven days after the first day of classes for the applicable term or session.
- Required information must remain available for at least two years and be updated as soon as practicable when information changes.
What Instructors of Record Need to Do
An instructor of record is the primary instructor or co-instructor responsible for course content and assignment of final grades. This may include tenured and tenure-track faculty, lecturers, adjuncts, and graduate assistants who are not working under the supervision of another instructor of record. It does not include guest lecturers or others who teach fewer than half of the class sessions.
- Prepare a syllabus that contains all required course information.
- Prepare or update a public-facing instructor CV and remove personal contact information such as a home address or home telephone number.
- Review the Your Syllabus at UT Austin page
- Submit materials according to department or college/school procedures by the local deadline.
- Update submitted materials promptly if required information changes.
Follow your Department Guidelines
Departments and colleges/schools may use different workflows, including Canvas, UT Simple Syllabus, local administrative review, or direct upload. Publishing a syllabus in Canvas supports student access, but faculty should follow the process communicated by their department or dean’s office to ensure the required public posting occurs.
Who Does What?
| Audience | Primary Responsibility | Where to Start |
|---|---|---|
| Instructors of record | Prepare and submit required syllabus and CV information; follow local procedures and deadlines. | Department administrator or dean’s office |
| Department administrators and chairs | Support instructors of record submissions, confirm local processes, and respond to department-level follow-up. | College/school guidance and CAA communications |
| Deans and academic leaders | Review college/school-level compliance information and support timely resolution of outstanding items. | CAA college-level report |
| Students and the public | Search publicly available course syllabi and instructor CVs. | Public Access Syllabi and CVs search tool |
Academic Term Deadlines
