University Faculty Gender Equity Council

Background

The UFGEC advises the Executive Vice President and Provost on ways to advance gender equity among faculty at UT Austin and promote a more inclusive and equitable campus. The Council regularly analyses factors that assess progress towards this goal, identifies areas for improvement, and presents reports outlining areas of concern, best practices, and potential solutions to the Provost. The UFGEC has over 30 members and includes representative from every college/school/unit on campus appointed to the council by the Provost

The UFGEC was formed under the charge of the Executive Vice President and Provost in 2014. (Prior to the formation of the UFGEC, the Council on the Status of Women Faculty considered the issue of gender equity following the 2008 Gender Equity Task Force Report.)

The UFGEC has focused on a variety of issues, including promotion and tenure guidelines; best practices for recruitment, retention, and promotion; leadership development programs; faculty accommodations tied to COVID-19;  analysis of key faculty metrics such as headcount, salaries, time to promotion;  title IX;  and endowment decisions. The Council also conceived and developed the Provost’s Distinguished Service Academy to recognize faculty who exemplify scholarship and have extraordinary achievements in mentoring and service to their college, the University, and the State of Texas and the Nation.

The UFGEC is joined by the Council for Racial and Ethnic Equity and Diversity (CREED) and the Council for LGBTQ+ Access, Equity, and Inclusion (Q+AEI), and the Disabled Faculty Equity Council (DFEC) to facilitate an inclusive climate of advancement and growth for all faculty.
