Dear UT Community,

I am extremely pleased to inform you that Dr. Eun-Ok Im will join The University of Texas at Austin as the next Dean of the School of Nursing. Dr. Im, who was recently the Senior Associate Dean for Research and Innovation and the Edith Folsom Honeycutt Endowed Chair in the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, will begin her appointment on September 1.

Dr. Im is an internationally recognized researcher with groundbreaking contributions in nursing science and oncology nursing. Her work focuses on the use of technology-based interventions to provide innovative care, and she is a leader in global, cross-cultural women’s health research. From 2007 to 2011, she was the La Quinta Motor Inns Inc. Centennial Professor in Nursing here at UT Austin. Dr. Im’s research career highlights include 74 funded studies totaling $190 million over the past 25 years, including serving as principal investigator on several major National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies.

Prior to her tenure at Emory University, Dr. Im was an Associate Dean for Research Development and Regulatory Affairs, a University Distinguished Professor and the Mary T. Champagne Professor in the School of Nursing at Duke University, and the Marjorie O. Rendell Endowed Chair in the School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania.

A passionate educator, Dr. Im has taught courses on nursing theory, nursing philosophy, critical literature review, research methods and global women’s health issues. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in public health from Seoul National University, as well as a master’s degree and Ph.D. in nursing from the University of California, San Francisco.

I want to thank the consultative committee for its excellent work identifying an exceptional pool of candidates for this position. Dr. Im is an exemplary scientist and mentor who will foster continued innovation in nursing science. Through her leadership, she will build on the school’s successes while developing the next generation of nurses and scholars.

I also want to thank Dean Alexa Stuifbergen for her outstanding leadership over the past fourteen years. Since the beginning of her tenure, Dean Stuifbergen has had a significant impact on our University and the School of Nursing, helping to secure over $56 million in new commitments to support scholarships, renovations, faculty and community-focused initiatives, including the establishment of 66 new endowments that have greatly enhanced the school’s mission of education, service and research.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Im on her appointment as Dean and thanking Dean Stuifbergen for her leadership and service!

Sincerely,

Sharon L. Wood
