Faculty Affairs Update – Oct. 28

Dear faculty colleagues,

In this week’s missive, we share several campus leadership positions and opportunities as well as a few important updates to keep in mind for yourself and others in case they are of interest.

Accepting Applications – Provost Academic Leaders Fellowship Position

The Faculty Affairs team is offering a leadership development opportunity for a professional-track (non-tenure-track) faculty member. This Provost’s Academic Leadership Fellow will collaborate with members of the Provost’s Faculty Affairs team to lead campus-wide efforts focused on career development mentorship for professional-track faculty. More information can be found at this link.

Accepting Applications – Diversity Leadership Position at Dell Med

Dell Medical School is recruiting its next Assistant Dean for Diversity. The person in this position will bring collaborative leadership and creativity to advance diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in partnership with departments across campus and the broader UT Austin community. You can learn more here.

Accepting Applications – Academic Leadership Positions

As a reminder, the Faculty Affairs team is still accepting applications and nominations for two executive leadership positions in the Provost’s Office. If you’d like to apply or nominate someone, you can do so using the relevant link below:

Accepting Nominations – Disabled Faculty Equity Council – Due Sunday, Oct. 31

And as another reminder, the newly formed Disabled Faculty Equity Council is seeking membership nominations. This new Equity Council will advise the provost and support the development of programs and policies to improve the campus-wide climate and institutional reputation for equity relating to disability, access, accommodations, and ableism. In recognition that ableism intersects with racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia, this council will include broad representation. The deadline for nominations is Sunday, Oct. 31. You can nominate yourself or someone else. If you have any questions, please contact either co-chair: Alison Kafer or Stephanie Cawthon.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

Unfortunately, there are still significant processing delays for students’ disability accommodation requests. This means that students with verified disabilities might not yet have been able to schedule an intake appointment that leads to formal approval of their necessary accommodations. This leads me to make two requests of our faculty

  1. Please use compassion and flexibility to find ways to accommodate your students’ learning needs even without the final, formal accommodation letter from our Services for Students with Disabilities team. However, if the student is in distress and needs additional support,
  2. Please encourage those students complete an Absence Notification Request with Student Emergency Services to initiate support. Student Emergency Services can provide notifications to faculty for temporary disabilities, remote learning requests due to immunocompromised family members, or for ongoing medical or mental health concerns.

Seminar for Retirement – Friday, November 5 at 1pm

Faculty and supervisors are invited to join us for a seminar on faculty retirement. Learn more about the basics of retiring from UT Austin and hear from a panel of retired faculty on what they wish they had known in making their decisions to retire.
