A sign-up form will be sent out in January with classes across the university that will be available for faculty to visit. Faculty can look for new teaching techniques they might want to see in action (e.g., a flipped classroom), or something they want to improve on in their own teaching (e.g., facilitating a small group discussion).
On February 8 and 9, faculty docents - members of the Provost’s Teaching Fellows - will meet their groups and walk to the classrooms to be visited. The docent will offer a short introduction, observe with the other faculty, and then take the entire group (including the faculty member who was observed) out for coffee after class to discuss the visit, what they learned, and how they might incorporate it into their own teaching.
Where did this idea come from?
The College of Natural Sciences, under the leadership of Dean Hicke, did a college-level version of this program in Fall 2016 as part of Teaching Discovery Days after learning about this successful model being used at other universities. Provost's Teaching Fellows involved in that program brought the concept to the broader group, which saw an opportunity to launch a campus-wide event to enable more interdisciplinary opportunities for learning and conversation. Provost McInnis was supportive of the idea and is excited to launch it across campus in Spring 2017.
The Provost’s Teaching Fellows program was designed to strengthen faculty participation in the Faculty Innovation Center, enhance faculty collaboration across disciplinary and institutional boundaries, and support specific faculty-led projects to improve teaching and learning.
The vision of the Provost’s Teaching Fellows program is of a UT Austin campus that embraces creativity, innovation, and passion for teaching and learning and serves as an international model for higher education.
